This item: the beginning of a lesson I wrote on statistics topics that appear on the Digital SAT college entrance exam. This is an example of my writing for the more advanced SAT math student. The lesson drew accolades from the reviewer as “the best-written math lesson he had ever read.”

Client: an after-school tutoring company.

Learners: students preparing for the new digital SAT. This lesson is aimed at those who were working to turn strong scores into top scores, most likely high school students in 11th or 12th grades (about 16-17 years old).

Project: a large remote team consisting largely of part-time tutors creating a few problem sets each week. Everyone on the team was also responsible for initial quality control checks on sets and lessons written by other members. All lessons and problem sets are aligned with College Board’s Assessment Framework. Answer keys and teacher’s guides are embedded throughout.

My role: I contributed over 130 problem sets across all math domains and difficulty levels. I was one of five full-time Curriculum Team staff members, also entrusted with final validation checks.

The process: I generally begin writing a math practice set by examining the learning objectives for the unit and the skills learners are practicing. I outline a few different sequences that solvers should experience, for instance, finding the mean from given data, finding a missing data point given the mean, and finding the effect on the mean when the data are changed. Most problem sets call for some abstract items and some set in context; finding suitable and interesting context may take some research. Consulting the College Board Assessment Framework for the SAT ensures that skills tested and presentation are in alignment. Incorrect answer choices are the results of likely errors.
